Sunol
Sunol was an extremely promising mare at a young age, and was bought by Robert Banner for a then-unnamed sum. He allowed, however, that it was more than $40,000. She was described as a high-strung mare who required special care when breaking. In 1889, there was a great East-West rivalry between Sunol and Axtel, which she won decisively by trotting the mile in 2:10:05. Her brilliant career ended early, in 1892, due to a crippling lameness, and she was retired as a broodmare.
