About O, Pegasus!

After seven very expensive years of college and graduate schooling, I have two Masters degrees and a job in a field only tangentially related to my studies. While my career is very satisfying, I miss academic research. This site is something of an attempt to put all that education to use.

I’ve been interested in the portrayal of horses in literature and art for a long time. I’ve built this site to help facilitate research into that subject, mine or others. There are a few things you should know, however:

  • I used Wikipedia and Pedigree Query as the starting (and sometimes ending) point for my research on horses’ and peoples’ bio notes. They were very convenient, but let this be a public record of my shame and an acknowledgment that those two sites are as authoritative as Swiss cheese.
  • What I know about art falls under the “Oooh, pretty!” heading. And sometimes not even that — I didn’t like Impression, Sunrise, for example, until I saw it in person. I have seen the Mona Lisa in person and still don’t get it. However, I am reasonably intelligent and am confident I can identify whether or not an artwork has a horse in it.
  • I have a personal bias for poetry and young adult books. I will defend my preference for young adult books when someone — anyone — is able to explain why American Idol is still popular.

This site soft launched in mid-June 2009 with approximately 150 texts, 100 art works, 150 horse bios, and 100 people bios, all based on the content of seven books. Although it didn’t launch with any sort of user accounts, I hope to add those in a future version. In the meantime, you are more than welcome to add comments, submit recommended texts, or contact me with comments, suggestions, and corrections.

Regards,

Sarah
