Caroline Norton

Caroline Norton was born in England in 1808, and she and her sisters were known as the “Three Graces” in London society. At nineteen, she married George Chappel Norton; the marriage quickly turned abusive and Caroline became a political advocate for women’s rights, particularly in marriage and divorce. Her success in passing The Married Women’s Property and Divorce Act meant that she could keep the earnings from her fiction and poetry, rather than having to turn it over to her husband.
